Tayabas is the Best

Tayabas is one of the most beautiful town in Quezon Province. It is situated at the south-eastern foothills of one of the famous volcanoes in the country, Mt Banahaw. It has a total land area of 23,095 hectares divided among its 66 barangays. The native of Tayabas lived in scattered villages. These Tayabenses had their own system of government, strict code of ethics, communal type of economy, and a very indigenous from of religion. For 131 years (1779-1910), the town of Tayabas was the cabecera of the then called Tayabas Province. The province is now called Quezon Province. The total population based on 2004 Mho profile was 76, 495.

There are three identified large scale manufacturing processing industries in Tayabas. These are the Arcoco Mill, New Tayabas Coco Oil Mill and Guanzon Lime Dev. Co. Inc. As the names simply, the two milling enterprises are coco based. However, the Guanzon Lime Dev. Co. Inc. generate their product with mineral found at the town. Furthermore, a historically and culturally significant economic activity that supports a popular demand both within and outside the town is the coconut wine industry. Lambanog, this local drink is presently being manufactured on a commercial scale.

Agriculture The Municipality of Tayabas is predominantly an agricultural town. About 97.14% of its total land area is devoted to agricultural production. The most dominant agricultural use is cocoland which 84.7 percent followed by ricelands with a share of 13.5 percent.

Tayabasin celebrates a week long activity which showcases the best in Tayabas arts, products, culture and tradition. This celebration commences every 7th until 15th day of May which is called “Mayohan sa Tayabas”. Highlights of this event is the Tiangge sa Mayohan, where Tayabasin craftsmen, artists and entrepreneurs would gather together and showcase the genuine works of Tayabasins, This festivity culminates in the traditional Hagisan ng Suman which coincides with the Feast Day of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers and laborers; a thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest throughout the whole year.

Araw ng Tayabas which celebrates every 13th day of August was designated as the day for commemorating heroism of Tayabasins. The event calls for unity, strengthens social bonding and encourages Tayabasins to renew commitment to service. Feast of San Miguel Archangel celebrates on every 29th day of September. Every 4th day of November the town commemorates the martyrdom of Apolinario de la Cruz (Ka Puli). A native of Lucban who organized and led the Cofradia de San Jose, a confraternity which resisted the Spanish rule from 1832 until the time of his death in 1841. Puli was shot by firing squad on November 4, 1841 outside the vicinity of Casa de Communidad in Tayabas. His body was cut up into pieces and his head put in a cage, stuck into a pole, and place in front of his mother’s house. The event aims at gaining respect and national recognition to the heroic deed of Apolinario de la Cruz or Hermano Puli.
